This unique project is designed to create a continuous source of funding for libraries and arts organizations in San Antonio. We’re bringing together performing artists and filmmakers in the city to workshop a new children's musical and film a documentary of the process. On-going revenues generated by these works in the state of Texas will help support these organizations for years to come. It's a celebration of the city, its artistic community, and rich cultural heritage.

"The process of creating this new original piece is great because we're telling the story the way we want it to be." Chris Rodriguez, Wonder Theatre

Set in the poorest library in America, the musical centers on the valiant and comic efforts of the library staff and child patrons to save the library from being shut down by an over-zealous building inspector. It is both entertaining and educational and celebrates the library’s important role in the community. We'll also develop a "road show" version of the musical to be performed in schools and community centers.

The Musical

"I can't think of ever having seen a musical that is entirely set in a library. It's really creative and new." Lindsey Van de Kirk, San Antonio Theatre Coalition

In the tradition of behind-the-scenes films, the documentary will treat viewers to the nuts-and-bolts process of creating and staging a musical from the ground up. We’ll see the key creative team at work as they polish the book and songs, hold auditions for the cast, design the set, props, and lighting, and endeavor to keep the production on track for its debut before a live audience. The film will also explore the diverse cultural and civic organizations in San Antonio that contribute to its unique identity.

The Documentary

Both the musical and documentary will have red carpet premieres. The documentary will be submitted to various film festivals to achieve wider exposure before being shopped to established distributors such as Netflix to reach a national and international audience.

Wider Exposure

"It's an excellent time to shed light on the theater community in San Antonio. It's an opportunity to expose a broader audience to the incredible professional work that is being done here." Mel Zarb-Cousin, Magik Theatre
